Renowned film art director Nitin Desai was found dead on Wednesday at his studio in Maharashtra's Raigad district neighbouring Mumbai, a senior police official said on Wednesday. He was 58.
Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide, the official said, adding they are investigating the case from all angles. "His body was found hanging with a rope in the morning at the N D Studios," Raigad Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge said.
The studio is located in the Karjat area of Raigad, about 50 km from Mumbai.
After being alerted, police rushed to the spot, the official said. The police are investigating the case from all possible angles, Gharge said.
Nitin was a four-time National Award winner for Best Art Direction. He has designed lavish sets for films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Jodha Akbar, Lagaan and Bajirao Mastani, among others. In his career spanning over 20 years, Nitin worked with noted filmmakers including Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, and others.
It was in 2005 when he opened ND Studios in Karjat, in the outskirts of Mumbai. Spread over 52 acre, the studio has been home to several film sets, the most prominent one being 'Jodha Akbar'.
Not just films, but several seasons of the reality show Bigg Boss were also hosted inside ND Studios.
