Sunny Deol’s actioner Gadar 2 has amassed Rs 83.10 crore in just two days since its release. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film opened at Rs 40.10 crore on Friday (August 11) and made Rs 43 crore nett the next day.
Gadar 2 is the sequel of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, which was released in 2001. The romantic period action-drama film was directed by Anil Sharma and set during the Partition of India in 1947. The film starred Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel in lead roles alongside Amrish Puri and Lillete Dubey.
In Gadar 2, the film is set in 1971, and Tara Singh returns to Lahore, Pakistan in the midst of an anti-India "Crush India" campaign to bring back his son Charanjeet aka Jeete. The sequel is also directed by Anil.
This year, Gadar 2’s opening is only second to Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which earned Rs 57 crore on its first day. Gadar 2 has already become the highest grosser for its lead actor Sunny Deol, who has been a part of the industry since the 1980s.
In comparison, Pankaj Tripathi and Akshay Kumar’s social comedy OMG 2 made Rs 10.26 crore on its opening day, which increased to Rs 14.5 crore on Saturday.
Gadar 2, however, didn’t receive praise from critics. Our review of the film reads, “At a time where propagandist films give sermons on India’s “internal enemies”, Gadar 2 seems to be stuck in the early 2000s when Pakistan was the only villain. Although inexcusable, the film does feel dated in its hatred.”
