Rajkumar Hirani, known for his films Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, 3 Idiots and PK, has helmed Dunki, starring Shah Rukh Khan which marks his first collaboration with him.
Opening up about how it was a long-time wish that came true, the filmmaker called Shah Rukh 'brave', adding the actor was aware that 'mass films are working well' at the box office in recent years.
Dunki, fronted by Shah Rukh Khan, is based on the illegal migration of people who travel through the dangerous ‘donkey route’ in search of a better life.
The much-discussed film comes after Shah Rukh’s blockbusters Pathaan and Jawan, both high-octane action thrillers that crossed over Rs 1,000 crore each at the box office. Dunki, which also stars Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal and Boman Irani, is a gentler film and has made Rs 300 crore – a success though not at par with the other two films.
In a post on X, he wrote that it's not about the box office collections every time and that he wanted to provide a great social message. "Shah Rukh Khan is a very brave actor, he was very well aware that mass films are working well on the box office in the recent few years but still chose to do Dunki. And it's not about the box office collections every time, we wanted to provide a great social message and luckily we are succeeded in this mission and also the film is doing very well on the BO (box office), people are really liking and appreciating the film Dunki, I am very happy about it," he said.
Rajkumar Hirani was responding to a clip of his recent interview with ANI where he said, "SRK was very curious about this story... he is a brave man and brave actor... he was very happy with the story, I wanted to work with Shah Rukh Khan since a long time... he is a great man who showers love on everybody.”
