The Padma Awards were announced by the Government of India late night on Thursday. Actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty, singer Usha Uthup and composer Pyarelal of the music-duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal will be conferred with the Padma Bhushan. Veteran actor Vyjayanthimala was awarded with the Padma Vibhushan.
Mithun began her acting career with the 1976 Bengali film Mrigayaa. He won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film. He is also known for films like Disco Dancer (1982), Agneepath (1990), Jallaad (1995) and Gunda (1998).
Usha Uthup is known as the jazz queen of India. Her evergreen songs include ‘Hari Om Hari’ (from Pyaara Dushman (1980)), ‘Ramba Ho’ (from Armaan (1981)), ‘Koi Yaha Aha Nache Nache’ (from Disco Dancer (1982)). During her career, she frequently collaborated with late singer Bappi Lahiri.
The Laxmikant-Pyarelal team is known for earworms like the Kishore Kumar-sung ‘Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi’ (from Mr. X in Bombay (1964)), Mohammed Rafi’s ‘Dard-E-Dil Dard-E-Jigar’ (from Karz (1980)) and ‘Ek Pyar Ka Naghma Hai’ crooned by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh, from the movie Shor (1972).
The veteran actor Vyjayanthimala is known for films like Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Ganga Jamuna (1961), Sangam (1964) and Jewel Thief (1967). She has been awarded the Padma Shri in the past.
